When you and your partner decide on building a new home or renovating your current home, unless you both like the exact same things you will probably find yourselves disagreeing on design decisions. (Hint: This is where having an interior designer with a background in psychology becomes invaluable!) Here are some tips from our interior design team in Sarasota on how to merge two different styles when designing your home:
- Do not ask everyone for their opinion. Asking all your friends and family for their design advice will just lead to confusion. You and your partner’s opinions are the only ones that matter. Your interior designer is there to help guide the conversation and offer expert advice to figure out which style will best suit both of you.
- Compromise and communication. You’re not going to agree on every single thing, so this is where communicating with each other becomes important. You may also have to decide what things you are willing to compromise on and what you are not willing to compromise.
- Identify a primary style to drive larger decisions. For example, a popular interior design style in Florida is coastal, but you may also like traditional or rustic. Use this primary style for bigger decisions, and then you can incorporate secondary styles for more of the details.
- Decide on a few focal points and design around them. Do you have some vintage pieces that you want to design around? A unique art piece? Or maybe you envision a large bookshelf or gorgeous sectional couch? Use these focal points as a place to get started with your designs.
- Limit your color palette. Using color throughout your home is a great way to bring cohesion and a flow. Try to limit your color palette, at least to start, so as to not overwhelm each space.
Of course, these are not hard and fast rules. This is just a helpful guide to get you started with how to merge two different styles. At the end of the day, this is your home and you and your partner want to be comfortable with how it looks and how it functions.
