If you follow us on Instagram, you know our team loves putting together style trays with different tiles, patterns, and textures to see how materials will interact with each other in a space. Using tile is a great way to add some style to your home, but with all the different types of tiles it can be overwhelming! Here are some tips for using tile to style your home.
First, let’s talk about different types of tile.
- Ceramic: One of the most common forms of tile that is durable and good for kitchens and bathrooms.
- Porcelain: This tile is good for emulating natural materials (like stone, brick and wood) without the upkeep. It’s all purpose and can be used outdoors.
- Mosaic: Let your creativity out with the different shapes, sizes, colors and materials. Mosaic tile is good as an accent.
- Natural stone: Good for large format tiles both indoors and outdoors.
- Glass: This tile offers a clean and minimalist look and is also stain resistant. The downside is glass, of course, chips easily, so you may want to refrain from using in high traffic areas like kitchens and bathrooms.
- Cement: Cement tiles have been around since the 19th century because they are so versatile. You can also create amazing patterns and colors. The downside is that they are difficult to install and require regular maintenance.
Trending Tile Style
Zellige: This trend from Morocco embraces the imperfections to create a unique looking statement piece in your home. They are usually created by hand, so each tile can have a different finish. We love this trend because it reminds us of traveling!
Terracotta: This trend is making a comeback! The earthy and baked clay tones are good for warming up a room.
Block Colors: A popular choice for bathrooms right now is block colors. Using tiles to achieve this is a great way to add a unique look to your space.
Hexagons: This trend has a classic vintage look to it, but can also look contemporary with the super clean, sharp lines.
Art Deco: Evoke the luxury and glamour of the 1920s with Art Deco tiles. This style is defined by geometric shapes, black and white, polished metal, mirrors and shine.
Round: Who says tiles need to be square? Buck tradition and opt for an eye-catching round shaped tile.
Subway: Perhaps one of the most recognizable trends is the popular subway tile. This vintage look is easy to modernize with colors and fun patterns like herringbone.
What’s our favorite tile style? Our team loves classic black and white marble in a checkerboard pattern. We also are loving the Zellige tiles in fun colors! Let us know which one is your favorite!
