Coastal…What?
With trends from nostalgic eras such as the 60’s, 70’s and even the recent 90’s and 2000’s. It’s no surprise that one of the hottest trends today is inspired by none other than our fashionable grandmothers, themselves.
You may have seen all the buzz of the “Coastal Grandmother” trend taking the tik tok world by storm. While the term was inspired by the fashion trends of bucket hats, linen pants, and cable knit sweaters, it has very quickly made its way into the interior design world as well.
As for interior design, we have come to find “Coastal Grandmother” as a cozy neutral based design. You can expect to see the perfect balance of nostalgic heirlooms and modern elements. Together they inspire relaxation and the comfort of “grandma’s home”.
It’s not just a trend, it’s a lifestyle.
While its name may give you the impression that you need to either live on the coast or be a grandmother to embody the term, you actually have to be neither to take on this relaxed aesthetic.
An individual who embodies the Coastal Grandmother trend is one who appreciates an elevated lifestyle. While they have time and money, they enjoy the simple things in life like the joy of their favorite candle or their favorite lovely bottle of wine.
They may have a fresh assortment of flowers on the kitchen counter. A color display of fresh produce on the dining room table and even some fresh local herbs awaiting trimming to garnish the family’s next meal.
They spend their evenings being wrapped up in a cozy knit blanket surrounded by a beautiful display of their favorite books.
While the design elements of a “Coastal Grandmother” design are important, the true nature of the trend is to feel a sense of relaxation, coziness, and serenity.
How to incorporate Coastal Grandmother elements in to your space.
We recommend beginning with either a white painted wall or a design element that provides a crisp and clean backdrop, such as shiplap.
- Bring in textures such as linens, jutes, wools, and knits.
- Keep your color palette soft. Creams, whites, pale blues, soft greens, pastel pinks.
- Accessorize your space with fresh flowers, colorful produce, and live greenery.
- Display baskets, wood cutting boards, nostalgic cookbooks, linen napkins/aprons, etc.
While we often see trends come and go, we don’t see this classical, comfortable, and cozy design trend going anywhere anytime soon!
