Have you been considering refreshing the interior and exterior of your current home?  Or looking to build a new home?  Either way, if marrying your interior space with your exterior space is important to you – then these design tips have been pulled together here just for you.

Overall Aesthetics

When you are taking into consideration marrying your interiors and exteriors to create a great flow throughout your home, it’s important to have a cohesive design aesthetic.  You can start by getting inspired by your home’s architecture and landscape of your home.  For example, if your home’s architecture is sleek and modern you will want to design these spaces in a way that best compliments it.  Incorporating similar modern design elements, materials, and colors.

Bring The Outdoors In

You can emphasize a strong connection between the interior space of your home and exterior space by incorporating elements from nature.  Assess your exterior space and incorporate those elements into your home.  For instance, if you have a lush green landscape you will want to introduce similar plants indoors or at least those same lush green colors into the interior space of your home.  Having large windows or glass doors to maximize the natural light and the visibility of the surrounding landscape will also influence the sense of harmony between the two spaces.

Coordinate Color Schemes

Choose a color palette that will work well in both your interior and exterior spaces. We hinted at this earlier, when considering the colors of your interior furnishings, paint, and decorative or accent pieces – select colors that complement or echo the exterior environment.  You can do this by pulling in a shade of green from your landscape and using it as paint colors, in wallpaper, pillows, or accent pieces in your home.  It doesn’t need to be a lot of green – in some cases, less is more.  Doing this will create a harmonious visual transition between the spaces.

We know this can get a little overwhelming.  You can help organize your thoughts and ideas by creating a mood board or pulling your design concepts and color schemes together on Pinterest.

Creating Seamless Transitions With Flooring

Pay attention to the transitions between your interior and exterior spaces. Use consistent flooring materials, such as tiles or wood, that can flow seamlessly from indoor to outdoor areas. An example of this would be if you have a natural stone color represented in your exterior space or landscape you may want to continue with that color in your exterior and interior flooring options.

Selecting Furniture & Materials

Create continuity with furniture and materials. Select materials that can be used interchangeably indoors and outdoors. For example, choose weather-resistant furniture and fabrics for outdoor areas that mimic the style and comfort of your indoor furniture. Another example would be using similar wood tones and incorporating that wood tone in both living spaces. This will help to create a unified look.

Consider Lighting

Lighting plays an important role in creating a cohesive atmosphere between your interiors and exteriors. Ensure that your lighting design is consistent throughout both spaces, using similar fixtures or lighting styles. Incorporate outdoor lighting elements, such as string lights, lanterns, or landscape lighting, that coordinate with your interior lighting scheme.

Accessories & Decor

Extend your interior style to your outdoor areas by incorporating accessories and decor that reflect your interior design theme. Use outdoor rugs, cushions, artwork, or sculptures that complement the style, colors, and patterns found inside your home. This will further enhance the seamless integration of the two spaces.

Personalizing Living Spaces

As a bonus, think about personalizing your outdoor space to suit your lifestyle.  This could include a cozy reading nook or an outdoor kitchen with a dining area.  As a whole, you want to design your spaces to reflect the ways you want to use them.

By doing this it will create a sense of personal connection and ensure that your interiors and exteriors truly feel like one unified space.
