Many of us love an open floor plan, right?  If you struggle to create a color scheme in your home to help large spaces flow together – you are in the right place.  Here we will give you a couple of different ways to put together a color scheme that will provide a cohesive flow in your home.

Choosing Your Color Scheme

One simple rule to follow is to choose three colors you want to see in your home.  This is not a hard and fast rule but if you want to simplify things, this is one way to do so.  You can do this by creating a mood board, find a little inspiration here.  Here we will give another example of how you can plan your selections.

  1. Color One:  Select a neutral color or a color you can live with for a long period of time, to paint the entire interior of your home.  This will allow you to keep that open concept feel and a great flow throughout the home.
  2. Color Two:  Thinking about the trim in your home, you will want to designate a color for that and keep it consistent throughout.  For example, if you go with a shade of gray on your walls, a white trim may be a good choice.
  3. Color Three:  This is where you can have a little fun!  Add pops of color with your accessories. Such as throw pillows, window treatments, home decor, etc.  Select items that you can change out more frequently, especially if you get bored with color easily.

You can always choose more than three colors (try not to go over five) but keep in mind the sightlines in your home.  What other rooms will you see when you are standing in your living room?  Think about incorporating colors that complement each other.

Get Inspired With This Color Scheme

Here is another option we hope you can gain some inspiration from.  We recently completed a project that introduces a color scheme that allows the rooms in the home to flow together.  The flooring and wall color are consistent throughout.  We mixed in some grays and added a little bit of green in every room.  There were also wood beams in the home and we pulled from that by using brown furnishings and rug accents that help to give a little more balance to the home.

As you can see in this home, you can be in the living room and see the dining room, the outdoor living space, etc.  You may also have noticed that the window frames are black and we made sure we complemented that with the black framed mirror and other small touches of black sprinkled in.  All of these details create the cohesiveness that you are trying to achieve in the home.
You can practically follow these rules with almost any color you choose.  Pick colors that make you feel good.  It is, however, your home and you want to feel relaxed and comfortable at home.  If you feel like this is not a challenge you want to conquer on your own, Trade Mark Interiors is always happy to help!
